Crochet Beach Bag

This fun bag can be used at the beach, as a funky diaper bag, or as a reusable shopping tote. It has one large outside pocket and two smaller inside pockets, perfect for your wallet and cell phone.

Materials:

Worsted Weight cotton yarn – 6 oz each of Colors A and B

Size H crochet Hook

2 stitch markers

¾” button

Yarn Needle

Base – uses approximately 80 yards of Color A

Round 1: With Color A (white in my photos) Chain 40. HDC in the 2nd chain from hook and in each chain to the end. 3HDC in end chain, placing a stitch marker in middle HDC. Rotate chain and continue to HDC in the OPPOSITE side of each chain (working in the round) back to the beginning of the chain. 3HDC in beginning chain, placing a stitch marker in the middle HDC. (80 HDC). Slst into beginning HDC.

Round 2: Chain 2. HDC in each HDC around. 3HDC in each HDC with a stitch marker, moving the stitch marker up to the middle HDC. (84 HDC).

Round 3: Repeat Round 2 (88 HDC)

Rounds 4 – 8: You are now working in a spiral. Do not join at the end of each round. Remove stitch markers. HDC in each HDC around (88 HDC). Cut Color A.

Body – uses approximately 220 yards of Color B

Rounds 9 – 32: Change to Color B. HDC in each HDC around (88 HDC). Cut Color B after Round 32.

Top of bag and button loop – uses approximately 50 yards of Color A

Rounds 33 – 36: Change to Color A. HDC in each HDC around. After Round 36, join to top of beginning HDC. (88 HDC)

Round 37 (button loop): Chain 1. Lay Bag Flat. Locate the CENTER BACK of your bag and mark it with a stitch marker. SC across until reach the stitch marker. Chain 6, slst into next stitch (button loop made). SC in remaining stitches around. Slst into beginning stitch. Cut Color A.

Center your button at the top front of your bag, lining it up with the button loop. Sew button into place.

OUTER POCKET – uses approximately 60 yards of Color A

Row 1: Using Color A, chain 27. HDC in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across (26 HDC).

Rows 2 - 24: Chain 2, turn. HDC in each HDC across (26 HDC).

Cut Color A, leaving a 36 inch tail for attaching pocket to bag. Center pocket to the front of the bag and sew in place, using the long tail.

INNER POCKET – uses approximately 30 yards of Color A

Row 1: Using Color A, chain 27. HDC in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across (26 HDC).

Rows 2 - 12: Chain 2, turn. HDC in each HDC across (26 HDC).

Cut Color A, leaving a 24 inch tail for attaching pocket to bag. Attach Inner Pocket to inside of bag, lining the bottom and sides up to match where the outer pocket is located. If you wish, you can sew a line up the inner pocket, dividing it into two smaller pockets. I made one pocket about 3” and the other about 5”, because that would fit my cell phone and wallet.

HANDLES (MAKE 2) – uses approximately 50 yards of Color A

Row 1: Using Color A and leaving a long tail, chain 5. HDC in 2nd chain from hook. HDC in each HDC across (4 HDC)

Rows 2 – 58 (or until handle is a comfortable length for you): Chain 2, turn. HDC in each HDC across (4 HDC).

Cut Color A, leaving a long tail for attaching handles to bag. Attach Handles to top of bag, about 2” from the sides. Weave in all ends.
